“MONKEY ARMS!” were the words of the day as we tried our first Kettlebell class (using WAGs, of course!). From “chopping trees” to “around the world” using legs, glutes, hips and core, this class was a definite challenge. However, unlike the other people taking class for the first time we had an advantage using our gloves. the non-slip design was a big confidence bolster for the maneuvers that required a firm grip moving through multiple planes of motion, simulating functional movement found in everyday life.
For beginning students and for those with wrist pain, WAGs are a helpful aid for loading the forearm and upper extremity correctly in weight-bearing exercises. A client of mine who frequently experiences wrist pain absolutely loved the gloves. She felt more secure during Long Stretch Series on the Reformer, and the absorbent lining with the non-skid bottom prevented sweat from interfering with her workout. She had none of the wrist pain she normally felt during plank exercises.
Over the next few weeks we will be showcasing 5 exercises for your core from different forms of exercise – yoga, TRX, Pilates, Kettlebells and more. First on our list: Yoga. Get ready to strike a pose, find a flow and work your abdominal muscles. Remember to warm-up and stretch before starting any exercise routine and consult an expert if you have questions.
Kristi Cooper White, of Pilates Anytime, recently discussed the practical and therapeutic uses of WAGs and how her clients have benefited from WAGs in their practice on Pilates Anytime. She also gave us a sneak peak of the WAGs model releasing this year – WAGs Flex. We’re very excited about the forthcoming addition, to be produced in the first half of 2011. Flex will be available at a price point that works for all budgets all while providing a level of support and injury prevention like its WAGs predecessors.
Do you have Blackberry Thumb? If your thumb pain is related to overuse the best thing you can do is give it a rest. Continuing with marathon texting or what ever repetitive movement is the culprit of your pain will only make matters worse. Rest and ice your thumb. In some cases a soft thumb splint may be recommended to immobilize the joints so the inflamed tendons can heal.
“To keep your wrists from overextending – especially in weight-bearing poses like Plank, Downward Facing Dog, Handstand and Crow – try the Wrist Assured Fitness Glove. A sewn-in wedged silicone gel pad at the heel of the hand provides extra support and decreases the angle you extend your wrist.” Thanks for the review, FitYoga! WAGs [...]

Three great strategies for preventing and eliminating wrist pain and injuries are outlined in this post, starting with changing your schedule. The objective of modifying your schedule is to reduce how often and how long you spend doing the pain inducing task. Urgent deadlines, productivity ratings or financial stress are real factors that contribute to overuse injuries. Many smart industries have implemented job rotation and other programs to reduce Repetitive Stress (or Strain) Injury (RSI) in the workplace, thus saving money on workman’s compensation claims and lost productivity.
